Sattra Maha Sathan are the 7 places where Lord Buddha enjoyed his happiness after enlightenment for about 1 week at each place. The two widely-known duplicates of Sattra Maha Sathan are Wat Suthat Thepphawararam in Bangkok and Wat Chedi Chet Yot in Chiang Mai Province. However, talking about Nong Khai Province, many people may think of the stories of Naga, while many of you may think of the archeological site which is considered the one and only in the world. What is that place? Let’s find the answer.  Wat Phra That Bang Phuan in Nong Khai Province is another important temple with a long history which has provided spiritual attachment for the people of Nong Khai Province for a long time. It receives great attention from tourists who visit Nong Khai Province. The temple has many interesting things, such as Phra That Bang Phuan, the temple’s principal pagoda. Its construction did not clearly appear, but there are many existing legends about the events that mention this Phra That Bang Phuan. The villagers believe that this stupa is the home of the stool of Lord Buddha. Phra That Bang Phuan collapsed due to natural disasters and was restored by the Fine Arts Department. Also, the temple organizes a celebration for the stupa on the 15th day of the waxing moon of the 3rd lunar month of every year. Moreover, the temple has another important historical site, Sattra Maha Sathan, which is the only Sattra Maha Sathan in the world with the ancient remains of all 7 places and has a sacred pool with a 7-head Naga sculpture at the center of the pool. According to legend, a strange phenomenon occurred after the Buddha’s relics were contained. The water radiated from the ground. The villagers believe that this area is the mountain of Naga who protects Phra That Bang Phuan. They then built this pool to be the sacred pool of the province. The water from the pool was used in many sacred ceremonies.  In addition to the historical sites and the stupa, there are many other archeological sites and objects in Wat Phra That Bang Phuan. For those of you who have faith and wish to witness the only remaining archeological site in the world, you can travel to Wat Phra That Bang Phuan in Nong Khai Province.
